PlatinumLS low sulfur heating oil
FAQ's

What is PlatinumLS?

PlatinumLS is a new, low sulfur home heating oil. It burns more reliably and efficiently than regular home
heating oil in burners, furnaces, and water heaters. PlatinumLS is also more environmentally friendly.

How is PlatinumLS different from regular heating oil?

PlatinumLS contains 75% less sulfur. Routinely home heating oil contains up to .2% sulfur by weight.
PlatinumLS contains only .05%.

Why is PlatinumLS better?

Safer for the environment
PlatinumLS is friendlier to the environment because its sulfur content is very low. As you heat
your home, traces of smoke rise up the chimney into the air. These vapors contain byproducts of
the sulfur in heating oil and can have a negative effect on air quality. Using low sulfur fuels can
reduce particulate matter emissions by as much as 80%.
Superior equipment performance
Sulfur in home heating oil can collect as soot or sludge in oil-powered equipment such as burners,
furnaces, and water heaters. Less sulfur in your heating oil means less sulfur build-up in your
heating system. As a cleaner burning fuel, PlatinumLS puts less wear and tear on equipment
and reduces time and money spent for routine cleaning.
Improved fuel reliability
Actene-A, a chemical conditioner, gives PlatinumLS superior stability and solvency. It starts
faster and burns smoother, with little gumming or sludging. Untreated heating oil can wax, gel,
or freeze in cold weather—posing risks to above ground or outside tanks, lines, and pipes.
Humidity, dust, and moisture also disrupt the stability of regular untreated home heating oil. The
integrity and stability of PlatinumLS is protected with Actene-A. As a result, it performs better
in a wider range of conditions, temperatures, and settings.

Does PlatinumLS cost more than regular heating oil?

No. Cheshire Oil sells PlatinumLS for the same price as regular (no. 2) home heating oil. Daily prices for
heating oil are posted on the company's website at www.cheshireoil.com. There are no costs, charges, or
fees for using or switching to PlatinumLS. As with all of Cheshire Oil's products and services, customers
can choose from a range of delivery and payment plans for PlatinumLS.

Why is Cheshire Oil changing over to PlatinumLS?
Cheshire Oil will offer only PlatinumLS to its customers as of June 1, 2003 because it is a superior
product. It reduces wear and tear on home heating systems and is safer for the environment. It makes
the most sense for customers and the community.

Is PlatinumLS required by law or regulation?

No. Cheshire Oil's shift to low sulfur heating oil is voluntary. The Environmental Protection Agency will
impose strict limits on the sulfur content of automobile diesel fuel beginning in 2006. At this point, there
are no government requirements on the sulfur content of heating oil. Cheshire Oil has made the change
because PlatinumLS is better for customers and communities. Within the oil heat industry, the Oilheat
Manufacturers Association and other leading industry groups support the transition to low sulfur fuels.

Is my current heating system compatible with PlatinumLS?

Yes. Existing oil burners and furnaces are compatible with PlatinumLS. In fact, heating systems run
cleaner and better with PlatinumLS because it leaves little to no deposits or build-up in boilers or tanks.

Do I have to do anything to switch to PlatinumLS?

No action or preparation is required to switch to PlatinumLS. Beginning on June 1, 2003 all the oil delivered
by Cheshire Oil will be low sulfur.
